A fireplace heats a room. That is its original function. But it also serves another purpose. A fireplace creates an atmosphere of reflection. It conveys homeliness, security and intimacy. Today, a fireplace's function as a decorative element often takes center stage. The phenomenon of the TV fireplace illustrates this shift in function: because a physical fireplace is often not available, the medium is adapted. The fireplace can be played as a file on screens and loudspeakers. In particular, if the video is played on a television in living room or bedroom situations, a fireplace atmosphere can be simulated. In this process of digitization, the original function of the fireplace, to radiate warmth, is lost. The fire is no longer a warm body, but a disembodied mass of data.
