Supra-dimensional Montage in Cinema and the Arts
Talk and workshopThe moving image is straining away from the confines of the rectangular screen, flatness and frontality, from the one-dimensional timeline of linear narrative, and passive viewing. As the vernacular “space” dominates contemporary discourse in the arts, the moving image is reimagined as a supra-dimensional extension of itself – as spatial, architectonic, immersive, responsive, poly-perspectival, and poly-temporal. A poetry of space emerges, comparable with the inventions that manifested in the artworks of the avantgarde, works that enfold embodiment, participation, and a multiplex geography. A new spatiotemporal experience of the cinematic arises out of the supra-dimensional approach.
